🚀 A Legal Obligation, A Challenge to Overcome

Since January 2024, all municipalities have been required to provide a biowaste source separation solution for their residents. However, a year later, only 40% of French citizens have access to such a system.

👉 While some municipalities struggle to implement these measures, others, like the Syndicat du Bois de l’Aumône (SBA) in Puy-de-Dôme, have turned this constraint into an outstanding environmental success. Let’s dive into this inspiring model!

🌍 A Pioneering Strategy for Composting

The SBA took the lead by launching biowaste sorting well before it became mandatory. As early as 1999, the first individual composters were distributed, and by 2010, collective composters were installed in neighborhoods and at the foot of apartment buildings.

💬 “Since it wasn’t common practice at the time, convincing local officials was challenging at first. The hardest part was finding pioneering sites. We started with a gendarmerie and a nursing home, which helped us demonstrate that composters did not produce odors or attract pests. From there, word-of-mouth did the rest.”Laura Dureuil, Circular Economy Project Manager at SBA.

Today, all residents in the area have access to a tailored and efficient solution, proving that with a solid strategy, anything is possible!

📉 Impressive Results: Significant Waste Reduction

Thanks to the SBA’s initiatives, household waste reduction has been remarkable:

9 household garbage bins per resident on average in 2023. ✅ 126 kg of household waste per resident per year, compared to the national average of 548 kg.

🔍 Less waste means less pollution and lower costs for the community!

🔎 A Resident-Centered Approach

The key to this success? Listening to local needs and continuously adapting the strategy.

📅 In 2018, the first biowaste collection master plan was designed based on housing types. It was optimized in 2022 to better fit local realities and budget constraints.

🔄 Tailored Sorting Solutions for Everyone 🏡🏙️

  • 📍 170 voluntary drop-off points replaced costly door-to-door collection.
  • 🌾 Shared composters in rural areas, recognizing that not all countryside residents have room for individual composting.
  • 📢 Awareness and communication campaigns: Regular information sessions and community outreach helped educate residents on best practices.

💰 Financial and Logistical Incentives for Sorting

Two major measures further encouraged residents to adopt biowaste sorting:

💲 Incentive-based pricing: Charging based on the volume of residual waste motivated residents to sort more efficiently.

🚛 Reduced garbage collection frequency: Switching to biweekly waste collection encouraged even the most reluctant individuals to separate their biowaste to avoid unpleasant odors.

🏆 A Model for the Rest of France

The success of the Syndicat du Bois de l’Aumône proves that:

Strategic planningCommunity engagementContinuous education

…are the keys to effective biowaste management!

🌎 While many French municipalities are still behind, this inspiring example demonstrates that with determination and concrete actions, biowaste sorting can be a success nationwide.
